Empowering the Children

I have over twenty years experience in Early Childhood Education as a teacher, consultant, and administrator. Working with hundreds of children in Illinois, Wisconsin, Germany, California, and Washington, I discovered that certain values were very important to me. Values about how people treat each other, their belongings, our world. Values about how we view and treat our own bodies and minds. Essentially, I wanted to teach young children to be considerate, kind, compassionate, peaceful, respectful, focused, busy, and happy explorers—to become children aware of their emotions and able to express them appropriately in addition to listening to another person’s point of view, and to become children who are interested in solving problems and not frightened of trying. I believe if the children in my care developed these qualities, they would naturally be capable of learning and reaching their developmental potentials, of achieving the educational standards that they are measured against in school. By balancing the children’s current interests with the various important lessons related to values that today’s children in particular need, I believe they will grow up safely and confidently into the responsible citizens of tomorrow.

After attending a Peace Leadership Training by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, I was inspired to begin working as a peace advocate as well. In August 2012, I launched my blog “Nurtured Children Grow. Growing Our Future. One Child at a Time” (http://nurturedchildrengrow. com). Shortly after, I wrote Empowering the Children: 12 Universal Values Your Child Must Learn To Succeed in Life. My book is available from my website and amazon.com. I currently offer coaching services and training to parents and teachers who are interested in empowering the children in their lives.

I am currently in the process of creating an nonviolence curriculum in partnership with Azim Khamisa, Founder of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation and President and CEO of the Children’s Safety Network. “The 5 Building Blocks to a Peaceful World: A Peacemaking and Problem Solving Program for Young Children” adapts TKF’s 6 Key Messages to meet the needs of our youngest learners.  It is a peace generating and violence prevention program that is solution-oriented. It will be in the pilot program phase over the next two years.
